در آنجا نه کتاب بود نه روزنامه و نه ساز و نه آزادی! پرندهها از این سرزمین گریخته بودند و یکمشت مردم کر و لال در هم میلولیدند و زیر شلاق و چکمه جلادان خودشان جان میکندند. احمدک دلش گرفت، نیلبکش را درآورد و یک آواز غمانگیز زد. دید همه با تعجب به او نگاه میکنند. فقط یک شتر لاغر و مردنی آمد به سازش گوش داد.

چرخ خرمن با صدای سوزناکش خوشههای طلایی گندم را خرد میکرد. گاوها که در اثر سیخک پشتشان زخم شده بود با شاخهای بلند و پیشانی گشاده تا غروب دور خودشان میگشتند. وضع او اکنون مثل همان گاوها بود. حالا میدانست این جانوران چه حس میکردند. او هم تمام زندگی چشمبسته بدور خودش چرخیده بود، مانند یابوی عصاری، مانند آن گاوها که خرمن را میکوبیدند.
