من رسائل الرافعي في إجاباته على أبي ريّة -رحمة الله عليهما- يسأل أبو رية عن رأي الرافعي فيما كتبه المنفلوطي أن الشعر الجاهلي شعر ساذج، فردّ عليه، ومن جملة ما قال: على أني أحب لك أن لا تحفل كثيرًا بأقوال المتأخرين، وكتاباتهم ومحاوراتهم فيما يختصّ بالأدب العربي وتاريخه، لأنهم جميعًا ضعاف لم يدرسوه ولم يفكروا فيه، فابحث أنت وفكر، واجتهد لنفسك فهذه هي السبيل.
