برای نخستین بار نفیسی به استناد دو سفینه، این رباعی را از رودکی دانسته اما نفیسی در چاپ نخست، به دلیل استفاده «دماغ» به معنی بینی انتساب این رباعی به رودکی را بسیار ضعیف دانسته است. (نفیسی، ۱۳۱۹, ۱۰۳۸)
سپس در جامع التواریخ در وقایع سال ۶۹۳ فقط بیت دوم این رباعی توسط درویشی، به صدر جهان گفته شد.
