Time to call it a day?!
To show off some newly learnt Xilinx FPGA tricks I let a signal goes through two manually instantiated not gates from LUTs, each placed at a furthest corner of the chip. Compared with direct assignment, the delay is ~7 ns. If I let it go through another pair of not gates with a top-to-bottom round trip, the delay is ~17 ns. That's how the timings got ruined!
