сегодня поразила такая история. В Восточной Европе по крайней мере девять рек с названием Десна — на одной из них стоит город Троицк. вместе с тем, читателю знакомо русское слово десница ’правая рука’. логично предположить, что все эти речки — правые притоки других полноводных рек. вот только Десна на Смоленщине — левый приток Днепра, другая Десна — под Тверью — левый приток Вязьмы и так далее. исключение составляе…

не вполне понятно, откуда взялась грузинская азбука. армяне считают, что из армянской. увидев эту картинку, с ними трудно не согласиться — пока не обнаружишь, что все эти очень похожие буквы обозначают совершенно разные звуки. выглядит издевательством.

Мордовия не зря звучит так похоже на Мордор. название республики происходит от эрзянского/мокшанского мирде ’муж’, которое было заимствовано из иранских языков (ср. перс. märd ’мужчина’). а слово мужчина в свою очередь восходит к ПИЕ корню *mrto ’смертный’ (ср. рус. мёртвый, англ. murder, фр. mort). то есть человек буквально — ’смертный’. удивительно, что была выбрана именно эта идея.

слово отец проиходит от слова от, которое вытеснило более древний ПИЕ корень phtḗr. но больше всего мне нравится, что потом оно обрело уменьшительный суффикс -ец- — как супец или холодец. почему так произошло? можно списать это на то, что дети так проявляли нежность к своим отцам. но есть и другое объяснение. мы привыкли считать, что язык стремится к упрощению: падежей всё меньше, а слова всё короче: раньше говорил…
