Další průběh války je znám. V srpnu, po vstupu „omezeného kontingentu“ ruských jednotek na Donbas (Ruská federace to oficiálně nikdy nepřiznala), byla ukrajinská armáda (VSU) poražena u Ilovajska a Luhaňska. Následně byl Porošenko nucen přistoupit na první Minské dohody. A pak, po dalším vojenském zostření na Donbase v lednu-únoru 2015 byly podepsány druhé Minské dohody. Taktické důvody spočívaly v tom, že ukrajinské postmajdanovské orgány vnímaly nekontrolovanou část Donbasu jako cizorodý prvek, jehož začlenění do Ukrajiny ve „zvláštním statusu“ by s sebou neslo obrovská politická rizika. Zároveň podle tehdejší logiky Kyjeva slibovalo zachování statu quo velké výhody. Zaprvé, neustálé udržování vojenského napětí na Donbase umožňovalo upozornit Západ na tento problém a vytvářelo přek…
Po začlenění separatistických území do Ukrajiny, ať už by byl do tamních orgánů zvolen kdokoli, by se nějakým způsobem ocitl na ukrajinském právním poli. Vstoupili by do ukrajinského politického a hospodářského života, rychle by si osvojili ukrajinská korupční schémata. A tím by se pro ně život na Ukrajině stal mnohem atraktivnějším než pod přísnou kontrolou Kremlu a FSB. Také západní partneři by s nimi rychle naváza…
Hlavní otázka je však jiná - i když bude dosaženo kompromisů a válka skončí, jak budou vztahy mezi Ukrajinou a Ruskem pokračovat? Budou obě země usilovat o mírové a nepřátelské vzájemné soužití, nebo budou svůj cíl spatřovat ve vzájemném vytváření trvalých problémů v naději na odvetný boj s následnou plnou kapitulací protivníka?
