«لأنّا نقولُ وأكبادُنا تحترق» كان جواب الأعرابي عن سرّ كون المراثي أجودَ أشعارِهم. أظن إضافة لجودتها، فإن مما يدفع النفوس إليها حال تلمّسها الأنس والسلوى -رُغم كونها موردًا للأشجان-؛ جمعها بين حرقة الفقد الذي لم يغادر أحدًا، وشموخ الأخلاق العليّة والسمات الزكيّة التي يرنو إليها الأريب والغريب. فكأن كل مرثية لوحة متكاملة، مُزج فيها منتهى عجز الإنسان وغاية قوّته، ففيها سلوّه وفيها سموّه.
