از سرتاسر زندگیش بیزار شد، از همه چیز و همه کس سر خورده بود. خودش را بیاندازه تنها و بیگانه حس کرد. راه دیگری نداشت مگر اینکه در یکی از شهرهای دور یا یکی از بندرهای جنوب به ماموریت برود و باقی زندگیش را در آنجا بسر ببرد و یا اینکه خودش را سر به نیست بکند. برود جایی که هیچکس را نبیند. صدای کسی را نشنود، در یک گودال بخوابد و دیگر بیدار نشود. چون برای نخستین بار حس کرد که میان او و همه کسانیکه دور او بودند گرداب ترسناک…

هدایت فعلا در هنرکده زیبا کار میکند. حقوقش ۳۶۰ تومان است. کاری در حقیقت ندارد. ظاهرا مترجم است ولی متنی وجود ندارد که محتاج ترجمه باشد. روزی نیم ساعت آنجا سری میزند. اول کلاهش را برمیدارد و در گوشهای میگذارد. بعد روی صندلی مینشیند و زنگ میزند و یک چای قندپهلو دستور میدهد. سپس مدتی به دیوارها نگاه میکند و اگر روزنامهای زیر دستش باشد به صفحه اول آن نگاه میکند (ولی نمیخواند) و پس از صرف چای مجددا بدون اینکه یک کلم…
