علمُ الكلامِ هو علمُ التكلُّف، تكلُّفٌ في الدلائل والمسائل، كلُّ من رزقه الله فطرةً سليمةً وأُنسًا بطريقةِ الشرع أدرك هذا بلا عُسر، ولو احتجَّ محتجٌّ على بطلان علمِ الكلام بقوله تعالى: (قل ما أسألكم عليه من أجرٍ وما أنا من المتكلِّفين) لكان مصيبًا. قال عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم في تفسيرها: «وما أنا من المتكلفين أتخرَّصُ وأتكلَّفُ ما لم يأمرني الله به».
