مازلت أذكر رغم مرور السنين أنني منذ وُلِدت أدركت حقيقتين اثنتين لا شك فيهما، أولهما أنني بنت ولست ولداً مثل أخي، وثانيهما أن بشرتي سمراء وليست بيضاء مثل أمي. ومع هاتين الحقيقتين أدركت شيئاً آخر أكثر أهمية، ذلك أن هاتين الصفتين وحدهما بدون أي عيوب كافيتان للحكم على مستقبلي بالفشل. كان المؤهل الوحيد الذي يرشح البنت -في ذلك الوقت- لمستقبل مضمون هي أن تكون جميلة، أو على الأقل بيضاء البشرة مثل الأتراك. جدتي لأمي ذات الأصل…
