يتذكر جوع أهل النار وعطشهم. فيه انزجار عن خواطر المعاصي والمخالفات، لأن النفس إذا شبعت طمعت بالمعاصي. لأن يطلع الله على نفسي وهي تنازعني على طعام وشراب أفضل من ... في الصوم حراسة لخواطر الإنسان، وأعظم الحراسة حراسة الخواطر ... فالنفس إذا اشغلت بالطاعة كالصيام شغلت عن المعاصي والخواطر. عناية السلف بالقرآن في رمضان: عثمان، رضي الله عنه، يختمه كل ليلة، من جرى لسانه بالقرآن وكان كثير القراءة له سهلت عليه قراءته.
