ابن الجوزي والذهبي فضلاً عن المتكلمين والصوفية، لا يقبل قولهم في الرجال جرحاً وتعديلاً، ولا يقبل قولهم في الأخبار تصحيحاً وتضعيفاً، لأنهم لا يسيرون في ذلك على منهج علمي، بل منهجهم قائم على الرأي والهوى، فلربما عدّلوا المجروحين، وأثنوا على الساقطين، وصححوا الأباطيل، وكذبوا بالصحاح، فمثلهم لا يؤتمن في حكمه، ولا يؤخذ برأيه.
