Фактически объединение фракций под эгидой SDF проходило параллельно с определением места развертывания и потом зачистки территории аэродрома в Латакии ВС РФ, хотя пропаганда любит говорить, что США создали SDF после начала операции, что неверно, хотя и совпадает с датами официально объявления.
