عام 1885م توفيت زوجة محمود سامي البارودي "عديلة يكن" عن سبعة وثلاثينَ عامًا، ونُعيَت إليه وهو في منفاه، فرثاها بداليَّةٍ من عيون شعره، في سبعة وستين بيتًا، ثم بعدها بقليل نُعيَت إليه ابنتهما "سميرة"، ففُجع حتى لم يستطع البكاء فرثاها بهذين البيتين فقط: فزعتُ إلى الدُّموع فلم تُجِبني وفَقدُ الدَّمعِ عند الحُزنِ داءُ وما قصَّرتُ في جزَعٍ، ولكنْ إذا غلبَ الأسى ذهبَ البُكاء!
