В основе действительно лежит проект, по которому в начале XIX века были построены кирпичные башни маяков Сескар и Толбухин. Маяк начал светить 1 (13) ноября 1864 года. Тогда маячная служба экспериментировала с конструкциями и оборудованием, поэтому для Потийского маяка башню изготовили в Англии, а фонарное сооружение (с водостоками-львятами!) и линзу II разряда привезли из Франции.
Оригинальная линза не сохранилась, но сейчас на маяке работает аппарат ЭМВ-930 с красным светофильтро…
