Как уже было отмечено утром 1 марта белые одержали небольшую победу над красными, но далее в течение дня развернулось генеральное сражение у Егорлыкской и станции Атаман. 27 февраля 1920 пополненная 8 армия красных вновь перешла через Дон и атаковала Батайск и Койсуг, но везде была отбита. Зато 9 армии удалось закрепиться на левом берегу Маныча. Ночью на 20 февраля в сильную метель к красным заставам в Гниловской пришли безоружные белогвардейцы и сказали, что они перебежчики и что следом за ними прибудут другие.
