چرا در قرون وسطی ظاهر مسیحیت ماند و باطنش رفت؟ کلیسا، مسیحیت را از یک "مسیر" به یک "ایستگاه" تبدیل کرد. در مسیر، انسان باید حرکت کند و به کمال برسد، اما در ایستگاه، فقط باید بماند و از دستورها اطاعت کند. کلیسا با پنهان کردن آموزههای باطنی مردم را در سطح نگه داشت تا قدرت خود را تثبیت کند. این پنهانکاری تا حدی بود که حتی امروزه نیز بسیاری از مسیحیان از وجود چنین آموزههای عمیقی در دین خود بیاطلاعاند.
