You can't imagine how surprised normies are to find out that this happened. Everyone forgets Russia was genociding its own people prior to and during WW2. The Holomodor, which killed roughly 6-8 million soviet citizens, had happened not 20 years prior to Germany's invasion of Russia on the Eastern front. German hatred of communism and the Soviet government was not surprising to many dissident Russians at the time.
