سيغموند فرويد هو المؤسس لعلم النفس التحليلي ويعتقد أنه بإمكان الناس أن يتشافوا من خلال إدراكهم لأفكارهم ودوافعهم اللاواعية وبالتالي يكتسبون المعرفة. والهدف من العلاج النفسي هو تحرير المشاعر والتجارب المكبوتة. والتحليل النفسي عادةً يُستخدم لعلاج الاكتئاب واضطراب القلق، ولا يتحقق الأمر إلا بتجربة علاجية يكون باستطاعة الفرد أن يتعافى من خلالها.
