عن عزة النفس التي كانت لدى العرب .. اُسِر الوليد بن الوليد يوم بدر كافرًا لدى المسلمين فجاء في افتدائه أخواه خالد وهشام ابنا الوليد فلما افتُدِيَ وفُك أسره ورجع إلى مكة أسلم، فسألوه هل أسلم وهو في أسر المسلمين فقال: كرهت أن يظنوا بي أنّي جزعت الأسر. فالوليد كره أن يُسلم وهو مأسور وانتظر حتى يرجع إلى دياره حتى لا يظنوا به أنه أسلم خوفًا من المسلمين أو لضعف منه ، رغم أنه قد وقع في قلبه شأن الإسلام.
