بلغتُ من التعب مقامًا لم تعد العواصف تُفزعني فيه. مرّت عليَّ حتى استنفدت دهشتي، وأخذت من روحي ما أرادت، ثم انصرفت، وأبقت في صدري سكينةً لم أعرفها من قبل. صرتُ أرى الأشياء تمضي، فلا أمدّ يدي إليها، وأرى الخسارات تقع، فلا أُخاصمها. فقد علّمتني الأيام أنّ القلب الذي خرج من شدائده حيًّا، يحمل هدوءًا لا تصنعه الراحة، وإنما تصنعه النجاة.
إن أشدّ أنواع الوحشة هي التي تأتي بعد امتلاءٍ طويل. حين يعتاد القلب أن يتّجه كلّ يومٍ إلى جهةٍ واحدة، ثم يجدها فجأةً موصدةً في وجهه. عندها لا يعرف إلى أين يمضي بما بقي فيه من مودة، فيظلّ يحملها كما يحمل المسافر متاعًا أثقله، وقد انتهت رحلته قبل أن يجد منزلًا يضعه فيه.
في القلب بابٌ تُغلقه خيبةٌ واحدة، ثم يعجز الزمان عن فتحه. يحمل الإنسان مفتاحه أعوامًا، ويقف أمام أبوابٍ كثيرة، ثم يمضي عنها جميعًا، إذ لم يعد يخشى الإغلاق، وإنما يخشى أن يعود إلى الوجع الذي خرج منه أوّل مرّة.
ما أكثر ما نخسره حين نُكثر الدفاع عن أنفسنا. فإنّ القلب إذا طال وقوفه في ساحات القتال، نسي هيئة البساتين، وألف صوت السيوف، حتى إذا أقبلت عليه المحبة، استقبلها بتحفّظ المحارب، لا بطمأنينة الآمن.
في القلب مواضع لا يبلغها أحد، مهما بلغ من القرب، تبقى عامرةً بالصمت، كأنها خُلقت لتكون مأوى للأشياء التي عجزت الكلمات عن حملها. فكلما حاول الإنسان أن يُخرج ما فيها، عادت إليه المعاني أثقل مما خرجت، وآثر السكوت، إذ رأى أن بعض المشاعر تُفسدها العبارة، ويصونها الكتمان.
إنّ أشدّ صور الانطفاء وجعًا تلك التي لا يلحظها أحد؛ حين يكفّ القلب عن انتظار الفرج، ويستريح من عناء التمنّي، ويُصبح الصمت وطنًا يأوي إليه، بعد أن أيقن أنّ بعض الخسارات لا تُجبر، وأنّ بعض الأرواح لا تنقصها النجاة، وإنما ينقصها سببٌ يجعلها ترغب في الحياة من جديد.
قضيتُ طورًا من عمري أُقيم في صقيعٍ لا تُدركه الفصول، صقيعٍ كان يسكنني كما تسكن الروحُ الجسد، يتسرّب في أعماقي تسربَ الليل في الأمكنة المهجورة، حتى جفّت في داخلي ينابيعُ الشعور، وانكمشت كلُّ رطوبةٍ كانت تصلح للحياة. فلم أكن أفيض انهمارًا، ولا أرتجف ارتجافَ الغيم إذا أثقله المطر، إنّما كنتُ جامدًا كشيءٍ طال عليه البرد حتى ألفه، أتدرّع بسكوني، وألوذ ببرودتي، وأرى في ذلك الصمت مأمنًا أعتصم به من العالم. مضت بي الأيّام وأ…
