В 1988 году праздновалось 1000-летие Крещения Руси. И в этот же год отец Матфей праздновал 50-летний юбилей. 25 лет своей жизни он преподавал в Московской духовной академии. В честь всех этих памятных дат Святейший Патриарх Пимен своей резолюцией от 31 января утвердил архимандрита Матфея (Мормыля) в звании профессора.
