قال ابن قتيبة الدينوري (ت: ٢٧٦ هـ) في تأويل مختلف الحديث (صـ٦٢): "وَالنَّاسُ أَسْرَابُ طَيْرٍ يَتْبَعُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا. وَلَوْ ظَهَرَ لَهُمْ مَنْ يَدَّعِي النُّبُوَّةَ -مَعَ مَعْرِفَتِهِمْ بِأَنَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَاتَمُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، أَوْ مَنْ يَدَّعِي الرُّبُوبِيَّةَ- لَوَجَدَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أَتْبَاعًا وَأَشْيَاعًا".
