بعد عدة شهور من الوحدة اصبح يخيفني نفاذ علبة سجائري اكثر من فقدان اي شيء في هذا العالم كانت تحترق من أجلي رغم بشاعة ما اقوم بهِ معها إلا انها تُقبْلني بشراهة في كل مرة اكون بها بمفردي.

لقد رأيت بأنني كالميت تقريباً وسط هؤلاء الناس ، فلا يوجد ما يربطني بهم أو يثير شغفي تجاههم ، لذلك آثرت أن أبقى وحيداً في قبوي ، هادئاً ساكناً بلا أي حراك ، دون أن أتكلف عناء النظر إلى وجوههم المسرفة في الحمق و الفضول ، فكان يحدث لي أن أبقى شهوراً بأكملها لا أرى أحدا أو أكلم أحدا . دوستويفسكي _ في قبوي
