نَشَرَ الزَمانُ عَلَيهِ بَعدَ أَنيسِهِ حُلَلَ الفَناءِ وَكُلُّ شَيءٍ فانِ وَلَقَد وَقَفتُ فَسَرَّني ماساءَني فيهِ وَأَضحَكَني الَّذي أَبكاني وَرَأَيتُ في عَرَصاتِهِ مَجموعَةً أُسدَ الشَرى وَرَبائِبَ الغِزلانِ أبو فراس الحمداني
إنَّ المحبين أحياءٌ وإن دُفِنوا في التُربِ أو غُرِّقوا في الماءِ أو حُرِقوا أو يقتلوا بسيوف وسط معركة أو حَتفَ أنفٍ وإن أضناهم الفَرقُ لو يسمعون منادي الحب صاح بهم يوما لَلَبَّاهُ من بالحب يحترق أبو بكر الشبلي - العصر العباسي
قال كثيّر عزّة يرثي صديقا له واسمه خندق الأسدي والبيت الثالث مشهور: يَعزُّ عليَّ أنْ نغدو جميعًا وتصبِحَ ثاوِيًا رَهْنًا بوادِ فلو فُودِيتَ من حَدَثِ المَنايا وقَيتُك بالطَّريفِ وبالتِّلادِ لقد أسمَعْتَ لو ناديتَ حيًّا ولكنْ لا حياةَ لمَنْ تُنادي *بالطريف وبالتلاد: بقديم ثروتي وجديدها.
فالغُصنُ يُنبِتُ غُصنًا حِينَ نَقطعُهُ والليلُ يُنجبُ صُبحًا حِينَ يَكتملُ سَتُمطرُ الأرضُ يَومًا رغمَ شِحّتِها ومِن بُطونِ المآسي يُولَدُ الأملُ
أخذَ أعرابيّ يَدعو ويُثني عَلى الله، ثمَّ خفضَ رأسهُ وبكىٰ وقَال: سُبحانَك، مثلي يَثني علىٰ مثلِك!
لما توسَّم المهلب بن صفره النجابةَ في ابنه يزيد وهو صغير؛ أراد أن يختبره؛ فقال: يابني، ما أشد البلاء؟ قال: معاداة العقلاء. قال: فهل غير ذلك يابني؟ قال: نعم مسألة البخلاء. قال: فهل غير ذلك يابني؟ قال: نعم أمر اللؤماء على الكرماء.
إنّما يُربَّى الإنسان بآلامه كما تُربّى السُّيوفُ بجمرِ النار الرافعي
ومُهدِّدِي بالقَتْلِ حَيْثُ جُنُودُهُ لفْظٌ يَقُولُ ولحظُ طَرْفٍ يَفْعَلُ ما لحظُهُ سَهْمٌ وَقَلْبي مَقْتَلٌ بَلْ كُلُّهُ سَهْمٌ وَكُلِّيَ مَقْتَلُ
