Le 21 décembre 1991, les dirigeants de onze républiques soviétiques y signent l'acte de dissolution de l'URSS. Almaty devient alors la capitale du Kazakhstan indépendant. En 1993, le gouvernement décida de renommer Alma-Ata en Almaty. En 1997, le président de la République du Kazakhstan, Noursoultan Nazarbaïev signe le décret de transfert de la capitale d'Almaty vers Astana.
